Yreka

Gold Rush county seat in far northern California, with Mount Shasta on the horizon.

Yreka is a small far-northern California town with more history than its I-5 exit first suggests. Gold brought miners here in 1851, and the old commercial core along West Miner Street still gives the place a frontier-county-seat feel.

It is not a polished destination like Ashland or a mountain base like Mount Shasta, but it makes a good spare-day stop if you are already in the Shasta Cascade. Walk the West Miner Street Historic District, visit the Siskiyou County Museum, and stretch your legs in Greenhorn Park.

The best reason to come is context. Yreka explains the mining, ranching, timber, and borderland history behind this corner of California, where Oregon is close and Mount Shasta keeps appearing at the end of the street.

Getting Around

Downtown Yreka is walkable once you park. Greenhorn Park and some outer stops need a short drive, and regional day trips require a car.

Guide

Getting There

Yreka sits just off Interstate 5, about 22 miles south of the Oregon border and north of Mount Shasta. A car is by far the easiest way to reach it and to connect it with the wider Shasta Cascade.
