National City Boulevard, between 18th and 33rd Streets, has been the densest concentration of car dealerships in San Diego County for almost 70 years. The strip is still active — about 20 brands sell side by side — but the more interesting layer is the surviving mid-century architecture: cantilevered glass showrooms, period neon signs, and the giant 1956 entry arch that has become a city landmark.
This is a quintessentially American sight, and one few visitors think to look at. The best time to walk is on a Sunday morning when the dealerships are closed and the lots are quiet — sun bouncing off the polished steel, vintage signage clearer without the bustle.
