Buena Vista Lagoon sits on the border between Oceanside and Carlsbad, a 202-acre freshwater reserve that serves as a critical stopover on the Pacific Flyway. The lagoon is managed as an ecological reserve and draws serious birders: herons, egrets, coots, grebes, and hundreds of migratory species pass through or overwinter here.
The Audubon Society's Nature Center on the south shore (at 2202 South Coast Highway) offers trail access and educational programs. Walking trails along the lagoon's edges provide good views of the water without disturbing nesting birds. It's a genuine natural area in the middle of developed Southern California — easily overlooked but worth visiting.
