Oceanside Harbor

Oceanside Harbor is the only recreational harbour between Los Angeles and San Diego, a full-service marina with about 900 boat slips, sport fishing operations, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and a strip of seafood restaurants along the harbor front. It sits at the mouth of the San Luis Rey River, a couple of miles north of the pier.

The harbor area is pleasant for a walk or a meal — more laid-back than the downtown beach strip, with working fishing boats alongside pleasure craft. Several sport fishing operators offer half-day and full-day trips for yellowtail, tuna, and rockfish. Whale-watching trips run in season from January through March.

A story
Oceanside Harbor was built in 1963, making it one of the newer man-made harbours on the Southern California coast. Creating it required dredging a new channel and building breakwaters to protect against the heavy swells that pound this stretch of coast — the project took years and cost far more than projected. The harbour now generates significant revenue from sport fishing, sailing, and waterfront dining, but the original budget battles and engineering challenges were considerable.
