Oceanside Beach

Oceanside Beach runs for several miles along the city's western edge, a wide sandy beach with consistent surf and a laid-back atmosphere. The area around the pier offers the best surf breaks — experienced surfers congregate here, and beginners can take lessons from one of several local surf schools that operate along this stretch.

North of the pier the beach widens and is somewhat quieter. South of it, toward Carlsbad, the strand narrows but remains pleasant for walking. The water temperature is cold by international standards — typical for the California coast — but wetsuits are widely available for hire if you want to surf. In summer the beach fills up but never reaches the chaotic crowds of Santa Monica or Coronado.

A story
Oceanside became a surf town in the 1950s when the sport spread north from San Diego, and it has remained one ever since. The World Surfing Games was held here in 1972, one of the first major international surfing competitions. Today the city hosts the US Open of Surfing and is home to numerous professional surfers who grew up riding the pier break.
