Stanford's main art museum, free and surprisingly comprehensive — over 38,000 works covering 5,000 years, from Mediterranean antiquity to contemporary photography. The galleries upstairs hold strong showings of European painting and Asian art; the photography and prints department punches above the typical university museum.
The real signature is on the lawn outside, the Rodin Sculpture Garden: twenty bronze casts including The Thinker, the Burghers of Calais, and the looming Gates of Hell. Free to wander any time, day or night, but best on weekday mornings before tour groups arrive. The museum closes Tuesdays.
