Palo Alto is more of a coffee-shop town than a bar town — the deal-making, the studying, and the laptop-tapping happen during the day, fuelled by espresso. University Avenue and California Avenue both have a good run of independent cafés. For drinks, the bars on University tend to be polite hotel lobbies; head to Mountain View or Menlo Park if you want a louder evening.
