Stanford Memorial Church

Mosaic-covered church at the head of the Main Quad

The visual anchor of the Main Quad — a Romanesque cross with a glittering Venetian-mosaic facade depicting Christ welcoming all comers. Jane Stanford commissioned it as a memorial to her husband and personally oversaw the design, picking biblical inscriptions from her own annotated bibles.

The interior is more restrained but rewards a sit-down: stained glass from Frederic Crowninshield, organ recitals on most Friday afternoons, and an unusually generous acoustic. The church survived both the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes but lost its dramatic original tower the first time and most of its mosaics the second; everything visible today is at least partially restored.
