Eberle Winery

Gary Eberle was one of the first to plant Syrah in California, doing so at his Estrella River Winery in 1974 before opening Eberle in 1982. The winery sits on the Eastside along Highway 46 and offers cave tours in addition to standard tastings — a maze of tunnels dug beneath the estate houses 16,000 barrels and a private dining room.

The cave tours depart regularly and give a decent explanation of barrel aging and wine storage. Even visitors with little interest in caves find the temperature contrast (a cool 13°C underground) welcome in summer. The Cabernet Sauvignon and the Côtes-du-Robles red blend are reliably good. The boar statue outside the tasting room is a longstanding local landmark.
