When to Go

Spring (March–May) is the most pleasant time to visit Paso Robles — temperatures are mild, the hills are green, and the vineyards are budding. Wine tourism is active but not overwhelming. Fall (September–October) brings harvest season: the crush is underway, wineries are at their busiest, and the landscape is at its most dramatic with golden light on the vines. This is the busiest period and accommodation is harder to find.

Summer is hot — inland temperatures regularly exceed 38°C — but the evenings cool quickly because of the marine influence. Many visitors time their days to taste in the morning and retreat to a pool in the afternoon. Winter is quiet, which makes it appealing if you want wineries to yourself, though some smaller operations have reduced hours between December and February.

The Harvest Wine Weekend in October and the Zinfandel Festival in March are the two major wine events, both of which sell out accommodation well in advance.
