California Rodeo Salinas

The California Rodeo Salinas is one of the largest and oldest rodeos on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit, held each year at the Salinas Sports Complex in mid-July. It draws top-ranked competitors in all the classic rodeo disciplines and is taken seriously by the professional rodeo world — this is not a tourist spectacle but a legitimate competition with significant prize money.

The four-day event includes nightly performances, a parade through downtown Salinas, and a series of ancillary events. The crowd skews local and Latino, and the atmosphere is less performatively western than many California rodeos. Tickets sell out early for the best seats; the cheaper grandstand sections are perfectly good. If you are in the area in mid-July, it is worth planning around.

A story
The California Rodeo has run every July since 1911, interrupted only by World War II. Steinbeck mentioned it in his writing, and it still draws professional cowboys from across the country competing in traditional PRCA events — bull riding, steer wrestling, team roping, and barrel racing. The crowd, largely local, takes the competition more seriously than the tourist-rodeo circuit.
