Lazy Bear

Two-Michelin-star dinner party that started as an underground supper club

Address 3416 19th St
Price Expensive

Lazy Bear is a two-Michelin-star restaurant in the Mission that started as an underground supper club in chef David Barzelay's apartment. The concept -- a tasting menu served communal-style, with courses presented by the chefs themselves -- survives in spirit, though the experience has grown more polished since the brick-and-mortar opening in 2014.

You buy tickets through the Tock platform rather than making a traditional reservation. Each course comes with a printed field guide instead of a menu. The food draws on California ingredients with creative, sometimes nostalgic touches. It is expensive and worth it if you want a special-occasion meal that feels nothing like a conventional restaurant.

A story
Chef David Barzelay started Lazy Bear in 2009 as an illegal supper club in his apartment after losing his law job. His wife pointed out that 'Lazy Bear' is an anagram of his surname.
