BART is the backbone for city-to-city travel around the bay, while Muni, AC Transit, Caltrain, ferries, and local shuttles fill in the gaps. Renting a car is useful for Muir Woods, Point Reyes, Half Moon Bay, and wine country, but it is a nuisance inside San Francisco. Ferries are slower than trains and much more pleasant.
