Muir Woods National Monument

A sheltered canyon of coast redwoods just north of the Golden Gate.

Muir Woods National Monument is one of the Bay Area stops that explains why this region keeps pulling visitors back. It works best when you give it time rather than treating it as a quick photo stop; the setting, history, and surrounding neighborhoods are part of the point.

Plan around weather, transit, and crowds. Fog can change the view in minutes, ferries and park shuttles may need advance booking, and weekends are noticeably busier. If you can go early or late in the day, the Bay often rewards you with softer light and a little more breathing room.

A story
Muir Woods survived partly because local congressman William Kent bought the canyon in 1905 and donated it to the federal government. When President Theodore Roosevelt suggested naming it after Kent, Kent insisted it honor John Muir instead.
