Adega is the only Portuguese restaurant in California to have held a Michelin star. The dining room, in a strip mall on East Santa Clara Street that gives no hint of what is inside, serves the cuisine of northern Portugal with both classical and modern preparations: salt cod, octopus, suckling pig, cataplana stews. The wine list focuses entirely on Portuguese bottles.
Reservations are strongly recommended. The restaurant has remained family-run despite the Michelin attention, and the chef's mother makes the bread served at the start of the meal. Adega has put San Jose on a culinary map most visitors do not associate with the city; if you have any interest in Portuguese cooking, this is the place in Northern California to find it.
