San Pedro Square Market

San Pedro Square Market is the social hub of downtown San Jose — a covered food market in the old produce district north of the main plaza, with a collection of food stalls, bars, and small restaurants gathered around a central drinking area. The market is at its best on weekend evenings when it fills with people, though it operates all week.

The food options range from tacos and Korean barbecue to wood-fired pizza and craft beer. The outdoor seating area on warmer evenings is one of the better places in the city to eat casually without committing to a full restaurant. San Pedro Square anchors the downtown dining scene and is worth knowing about even if you end up eating somewhere else.

A story
The neighbourhood around San Pedro Square was San Jose's first Chinatown in the 1860s, before the Chinese residents were expelled and the area burned in one of California's many anti-Chinese riots. The Market Street Chinatown that replaced it a few blocks away is now marked by a heritage plaque — a reminder that the pleasant downtown neighbourhood visitors enjoy today has a considerably darker foundation.
