Dogtown Coffee on Main Street takes its name from the 1970s skateboarding subculture that originated in this part of Santa Monica and Venice — the Zephyr skate team, the Z-Boys, the culture documented in the film Lords of Dogtown. The connection is genuine: the founders came from that world and the shop's aesthetic reflects it, without being a theme restaurant.
The coffee is taken seriously: single-origin espresso, careful extraction, good milk technique. The room is relaxed and usually full of people working on laptops alongside surfers coming off the beach a block away. The Main Street location puts it in the Ocean Park neighbourhood, slightly removed from the tourist centre, which keeps the atmosphere more local.
