Santa Monica Place

An open-air mall at the south end of the Promenade with good restaurants on the rooftop

Santa Monica Place sits at the southern end of Third Street Promenade, originally designed by Frank Gehry in 1980 as an enclosed mall and reopened in 2010 as an open-air complex. The current incarnation has the standard upscale retail mix, but the rooftop food hall is the most useful part — a collection of food vendors with outdoor seating and decent ocean views that makes a reasonable lunch option when you are already in the area.

The building connects directly to the Promenade and is hard to miss. The Gehry original is long gone in terms of design; what remains is a competent shopping destination that serves its purpose without particular distinction.
