Oroville has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 38°C (100°F) and the town bakes from June through September — the heat drives visitors to the lake, where water temperatures are pleasant for swimming by July. If you're coming to boat, fish, or houseboat on Lake Oroville, summer is the season, but pack sun protection and stay hydrated.
Spring is arguably the best time to visit. March and April bring wildflower blooms to the basalt mesas around Table Mountain — goldfields, owl's clover, and blue dicks turn the hillsides vivid yellow and purple. The Feather River runs high with snowmelt in spring, making it the prime season for white-water rafting. Spring is also when steelhead trout and chinook salmon runs peak below Thermalito Diversion Dam.
Winter is mild at the valley floor — frost is occasional but snow is rare. Rainfall concentrates between November and March, and the hills turn briefly green. The dam and reservoir are accessible year-round for fishing, though boat traffic drops off dramatically.
