Chen Art Gallery

The Chen Art Gallery is the most unexpected attraction in Torrance — a serious collection of Chinese imperial art hidden inside the headquarters of the Sunrider International corporation, on Western Avenue. Visits are by appointment only, free, and conducted as a guided tour by Sunrider staff.

The collection spans several thousand years of Chinese decorative art, with particular strength in jade, porcelain, and gilt bronzes. Galleries are well lit, the cases professional-grade, and the guides knowledgeable. Genuinely worth the small effort of booking ahead — there is little else like it on this side of Los Angeles.

A story
Tei-Fu Chen made his fortune from the herbal-supplements company Sunrider, and over decades quietly assembled one of the finest private collections of Chinese imperial art outside Asia — Tang and Song bronzes, Ming porcelain, jade carvings spanning two thousand years. Rather than donate it to a museum, he installed it on the third floor of the Sunrider headquarters in Torrance, where it now sits behind the corporate reception desk in a series of museum-grade galleries.
