The Roaring Fork Valley and surrounding mountains offer a good range of day trips from Aspen, from old mining towns and hot springs to Colorado wine country. Most are reachable within one to two hours by car.
Carbondale, Colorado
Located just 30 minutes from Aspen, Carbondale still has a bit of Wild West character. In summer there is a farmer's market with live music on Wednesdays, a rodeo on Thursdays, and late night dances on Fridays. Year-round you can stroll Main Street to visit art galleries, cafes, and boutiques.
Redstone, Colorado
A former mining village in the Crystal River Valley, about 90 minutes from Aspen. The town has antique shops, art galleries, and an old-fashioned general store. The old schoolhouse and miner's cabins still stand, and Redstone Castle is worth a tour.
Paonia, Colorado
Nearly three hours from Aspen through scenic country into Colorado's wine region. Stop by Leroux Creek Vineyards, Stone Cottage Cellars, or Alfred Eames Cellars for tastings. Revolution Brewing offers ales if wine is not your thing. In the fall you can go apple picking.
