The collapsed log buildings of Ashcroft stand in a high meadow at 2,900 metres in the Castle Creek Valley, twelve miles south of Aspen. The Aspen Historical Society maintains the site and there is a small visitor cabin in summer with displays on the town's brief silver-boom existence. About a dozen original wooden buildings still stand, including the hotel (Hotel View), the saloon, the post office, and several miners' cabins, all weathered to grey.
In winter the road is closed to cars and Ashcroft becomes a Nordic ski destination — the Ashcroft Ski Touring centre runs 35 km of groomed trails through the meadow and surrounding forest, with the Pine Creek Cookhouse serving lunches at the end of a 1.5 km ski-in trail. The summer drive in along Castle Creek is itself beautiful, and the road continues past Ashcroft another four miles to a popular trailhead for the Conundrum Creek hike.
