Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse

The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse is one of the most beautiful small buildings in Colorado — a hand-crafted gift from Boulder's sister city of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, installed on Boulder Creek in 1998. The building was designed and built by Tajik master craftsmen, featuring hand-painted and hand-carved ceramic columns, a carved wooden ceiling, and intricate tilework throughout. Walking inside feels like walking into Central Asia.

The teahouse operates as a restaurant serving tea, Central Asian-influenced dishes, and a full menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sitting at a table surrounded by the painted columns and ceramic panels while the creek runs outside is genuinely pleasant. The gardens around the teahouse are also worth walking through. It's located in Central Park, along Boulder Creek Path, within easy walking distance of Pearl Street.

A story
The teahouse was built in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, by 40 master artisans over two years, then disassembled, shipped to Boulder, and reassembled here. Sister-city relationships normally produce plaques and formal dinners; Dushanbe's gift was a hand-carved and hand-painted building of extraordinary craftsmanship. The painted ceramic panels on the exterior, the carved and gilded columns, and the painted ceiling inside were all produced using traditional Central Asian techniques that have barely changed in centuries.
