New Belgium Brewing

New Belgium is the brewery that put Fort Collins on the national craft beer map. The campus on Linden Street, just west of Old Town, is worth visiting not just for the beer but for the facility itself — a large, sustainably-built complex with river access, outdoor spaces, and a genuinely interesting free brewery tour that covers the history of the company and the brewing process.

The taproom pours the full range of New Belgium beers, from the ubiquitous Fat Tire to rotating seasonal and experimental brews. Tours run daily and include tastings. The beer garden by the river is excellent in summer. New Belgium is an employee-owned company and genuinely committed to its own sustainability claims — the tour covers this in some depth.

A story
New Belgium was founded in 1991 by a couple who had brought Belgian beer culture back from a bicycle trip through Europe. The original Fat Tire amber ale was inspired by those Belgian cycling adventures, and the brewery kept cycling as its identity — New Belgium is now one of the most prominent advocates for cycling infrastructure in US cities, and its Fort Collins campus has a bike valet and a cycle path to Old Town.
