Doc Holliday's Grave

Up on the hillside above town, Linwood Cemetery holds the grave of John Henry "Doc" Holliday, the dentist-turned-gambler-turned-gunfighter who was Wyatt Earp's closest friend at the OK Corral. The grave is well-marked, adorned with playing cards and whiskey bottles left by visitors, and looks out over the town and the canyon below.

The walk up from downtown takes about 20 minutes. The cemetery also has good views in its own right. A small monument next to the grave notes the uncertainty about his exact burial location — the original grave marker was lost, and the current stone marks the approximate spot. It's a pilgrimage point for Western history enthusiasts and, on summer evenings, a quiet place to watch the light fade on the canyon walls.

A story
Doc Holliday arrived in Glenwood Springs in 1887, a dying man who hoped the mineral air and hot springs would slow his tuberculosis. They did not. He died in his hotel room on 8 November 1887, aged 36. Legend has it his last words were "This is funny" — he had always expected to die with his boots on, in a gunfight, not bedridden in a mountain resort.
