When to Go

Glenwood Springs works year-round. Summer (June–August) is peak season for hiking, rafting, and Hanging Lake; the hot springs pools are crowded but the outdoor country is at its best. Temperatures are warm but rarely brutal — highs usually stay in the mid-20s Celsius, cooler at altitude.

Winter brings skiers heading for Aspen and Vail, and the hot springs take on a different appeal with snow on the canyon walls and steam rising off the water. The town is quieter and prices are lower than at the ski resorts themselves. Spring (April–May) is snowmelt season: river levels are high and dramatic for rafting, wildflowers appear on the canyon slopes, and crowds are lighter. Autumn (September–October) brings aspens turning gold in the mountains above town — some of the best fall colour in Colorado.
