Grand Junction's main draw is the landscape immediately outside the city. Colorado National Monument is just minutes from downtown — a canyon country of red sandstone monoliths, rim drives, and hiking trails that rivals Utah but draws a fraction of the crowds. The Palisade wine region, ten miles east, has about two dozen wineries and some of the best peaches in the state. Mountain bikers come for the Lunch Loops and the Kokopelli Trail system. The rivers — the Colorado and the Gunnison, which meet here — offer rafting from spring through late summer.
