The park entrance is on US 160 between Cortez and Mancos, about 35 miles west of Durango. From the entrance, allow significant time to reach Chapin Mesa; the road climbs, curves, and is slower than mileage suggests. Cortez is the closest practical base, while Durango works well if you are combining Mesa Verde with the San Juan Mountains.
