Paonia

North Fork Valley town of orchards, high-country vineyards, artists, and mountain views below the West Elks.

Paonia sits in Colorado's North Fork Valley, a small town surrounded by orchards, vineyards and the dry mesas below the West Elk Mountains. It is not a resort town in the Aspen or Telluride sense. Its appeal is quieter: fruit country, farm roads, small wineries, a real arts scene and mountain views that appear at the end of ordinary streets.

The town is the natural base for the West Elks wine area, one of Colorado's most distinctive growing regions. Stone Cottage Cellars and Azura Cellars both sit above town with tasting rooms that make the landscape part of the visit. In town, Blue Sage Center for the Arts is the clearest sign of Paonia's creative streak.

Paonia also has a useful outdoors side. Paonia River Park gives easy access to the North Fork of the Gunnison River, while Paonia State Park lies up the valley toward McClure Pass, with a reservoir, wildflowers and Ragged Mountain views. Come for a slow day of tastings and back roads rather than a checklist of grand monuments.
