US 550 links Silverton with Durango to the south and Ouray to the north. The northern stretch over Red Mountain Pass is gorgeous and exposed, with sharp curves and few guardrails. In summer, the Durango & Silverton train is the most memorable way to arrive; in winter, check road conditions carefully.
