Sally's opened in 1938 when Salvatore Consiglio, a nephew of Frank Pepe, set up just down Wooster Street from his uncle's restaurant. The rivalry between the two establishments has been a New Haven institution ever since. Sally's pies are thinner than Pepe's and the tomato sauce is applied more generously; devotees insist it is superior. The room is small, the decor unchanged, and the wait — on a Friday or Saturday night — can be over an hour. It is worth it. Cash only; no reservations.
