Rodney Square

Rodney Square is the central public space of downtown Wilmington, named for Caesar Rodney — the Delaware delegate to the Continental Congress who rode through the night on 1 July 1776 to break the colonial tie and vote for independence. His equestrian statue stands at the centre of the square.

The buildings around the square include the Daniel L. Herrmann Courthouse, the US Post Office (1907) by James Knox Taylor, the old DuPont Building (1908) — one of the first highrises in Wilmington — and the Wilmington Public Library. The Clifford Brown Jazz Festival is held here every June, drawing crowds to the city for the largest free jazz festival on the East Coast.

A short walk in any direction from the square covers most of central Wilmington.
