Carrabelle

Forgotten Coast fishing town with white-sand beaches, a lighthouse, wartime history, and wild state forest.

Carrabelle is a small fishing town on Florida's Forgotten Coast, where US 98 follows a quiet run of Gulf shoreline, marsh, pine forest, and low-key beach communities. It is also the eastern end of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, so boats are part of the town's everyday rhythm.

The appeal is not one big sight but a cluster of easy, good stops. Crooked River Lighthouse marks the coast west of town, Carrabelle Beach gives you white sand without the usual Florida crowd, and Tate's Hell State Forest opens into a huge backcountry of wetlands and old logging roads.

Carrabelle has a bit of oddball history too. The World's Smallest Police Station is exactly the sort of roadside stop that makes sense here, while the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum tells the story of the soldiers trained along this coast before the Second World War.
