Capitol Theatre

The Bilheimer Capitol Theatre sits on Cleveland Street in the heart of downtown Clearwater and is one of the most atmospheric live music venues on the Gulf Coast. The restored 1921 building has an intimate 733-seat layout where no seat is more than 75 feet from the stage, and the programming leans toward rock, blues, jazz, and Americana acts — the kind of mid-size shows that feel personal rather than corporate.

The Mediterranean Revival exterior, with its arched windows and terra cotta details, anchors the Cleveland Street commercial district. Before or after a show, the surrounding blocks have enough restaurants and bars to make an evening of it. Check the schedule at Ruth Eckerd Hall's website; popular shows sell out quickly, but the small venue means even a last-minute ticket gets you a good seat.

A story
The Capitol Theatre opened in 1921 as a silent film house and vaudeville venue. By the 2000s it had fallen into disrepair, but a $6.5 million restoration in 2014 brought the 733-seat theater back to life, preserving its Mediterranean Revival facade while adding modern sound and lighting. It is now managed by Ruth Eckerd Hall and hosts more than 200 performances a year.
