Daytona makes a useful base for exploring east-central Florida. St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the United States, is about an hour up I-95 — a half-day in itself, more if you stop at the Castillo de San Marcos and the historic district. Orlando and its constellation of theme parks is around 50 miles inland on I-4. South of town, Canaveral National Seashore stretches for 24 undeveloped miles down the Atlantic coast and ends at the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex.
