Jackie Robinson Ballpark is one of Daytona Beach's strongest pieces of living history. The park opened as City Island Ball Park in 1914, but its defining story came in 1946, when Jackie Robinson played in Daytona during his first season with the Montreal Royals. That season came before his 1947 debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and Daytona became part of the long, difficult route by which Robinson broke baseball's colour barrier.
The ballpark still hosts minor-league baseball, which keeps the place from feeling embalmed. Go for a game if the Tortugas are at home; otherwise, the setting on City Island and the Robinson memorials make it worth a look for anyone interested in civil-rights history, baseball, or the way American memory sometimes hides in modest local venues.
