DuBois Park & Pioneer Home

DuBois Park occupies a peninsula at the Jupiter Inlet where the Indian River Lagoon meets the Atlantic, with water on three sides and panoramic views across to the lighthouse. The park has a swimming area in the sheltered cove, a boat launch, and easy snorkelling in the inlet. It is a popular and genuinely beautiful spot for an afternoon.

The DuBois Pioneer Home, built in 1898 and one of the oldest houses in Palm Beach County, stands in the park and opens for tours on certain days. The small wooden house gives an unusually direct sense of what life was like on this stretch of coast in the years before the railroad arrived and the town developed. The surrounding shell midden on which it stands is itself a historical monument to the people who lived here long before any pioneer arrived.

A story
Harry DuBois built his home here in 1898 on a shell midden left by the Jeaga people, a Tequesta-related group who inhabited this coastline for at least 2,000 years. The house sits on the mound they accumulated over centuries of shellfish harvesting — which is why the ground floor is several feet higher than the surrounding land.
