Jupiter

Palm Beach County coastal town where the Loxahatchee River meets the Atlantic at a red-brick lighthouse.

Jupiter is a coastal town in Palm Beach County where the Loxahatchee River meets the Atlantic. It is quieter and more laid-back than the bigger towns down the coast, with a strong outdoors culture built around the water — kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and diving are all part of daily life here.

The landmark everyone comes to see is the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, a red-brick tower built in 1860 that still flashes its light across the inlet. You can climb it for views up and down the coast, and the surrounding park has a small museum covering the area's Seminole and pioneer history.

Blowing Rocks Preserve, a few minutes south on Jupiter Island, is one of the most unusual stretches of coastline in Florida — an Anastasia limestone shoreline where waves blast through holes in the rock at high tide, sending plumes of spray into the air. The Loxahatchee River, Florida's first National Wild and Scenic River, winds through cypress swamps inland and is best explored by kayak from Riverbend County Park.
