Carved from a coral rock quarry in 1924, the Venetian Pool is one of the most unusual swimming spots in the country. The pool is fed by spring water — 820,000 gallons, drained and refilled daily in summer — and surrounded by Venetian-style architecture: loggias, porticos, a stone bridge, waterfalls, and two observation towers. It feels more like swimming in an Italian grotto than a municipal pool. Entry is limited, so arrive early in summer. Children under three are not admitted.
story: > The quarry originally provided coral rock for the construction of Coral Gables itself. Esther Williams and Johnny Weissmuller both swam here, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
