Canopy Roads

Oak-canopied roads draped in Spanish moss

Tallahassee has five officially designated canopy roads — Old St. Augustine Road, Miccosukee Road, Centerville Road, Meridian Road, and Old Bainbridge Road — where live oaks planted centuries ago have grown to arch completely over the road, creating tunnels of Spanish-moss-draped canopy. Miccosukee Road is probably the most impressive stretch. These are not scenic drives in the theme-park sense; they are working roads through quiet countryside, and the effect is genuinely beautiful. Best experienced in the early morning before traffic picks up.
