Apalachicola and St. George Island, 75 miles southwest, are worth a day trip — among the quietest and most beautiful stretches of the Florida Gulf coast, with oyster bars, fishing villages, and empty barrier island beaches. Panama City Beach is about 100 miles west and takes 90 minutes to drive. The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is about 2 hours north into Georgia, with boat tours through cypress swamp.
