Florida State Capitol

Old and new capitols side by side with 22nd-floor views

The 1977 high-rise capitol tower stands directly behind the old 1902 capitol, which has been preserved as a museum. The contrast is jarring and deliberate — the old building's red-and-white striped awnings and Beaux-Arts dome sit in the shadow of a 22-story glass tower. Both are free to enter. The observation deck on the 22nd floor offers the best view of the city and the surrounding forest canopy. The old capitol houses a history museum covering Florida's political past, including a recreation of the 2000 election recount room.
