Park Avenue is Tallahassee's oldest and most architecturally distinguished street, lined with antebellum mansions, churches, and live oak trees that create a canopy over the road. The 1979-listed historic district stretches for several blocks east of the capitol complex and contains some of the finest 19th-century architecture in northern Florida.
Walking the street on a spring morning, with azaleas in bloom and the oak canopy filtering the light, is one of Tallahassee's more memorable experiences. The Columns (1830), First Presbyterian Church (1838), and several Greek Revival mansions are all within the district. It is also the route for the formal processions that accompany legislative session each spring.
