Fort Oglethorpe was a United States Army cavalry post from 1902 to 1946, and the 6th Cavalry Museum on Barnhardt Circle preserves the history of that installation and of the regiment that was based here. The fort trained soldiers during both World Wars; during the Second World War it served as a basic training center and then as a prisoner of war camp for German officers.
The museum occupies one of the original brick barracks buildings in the old post area, a handsome Colonial Revival structure that survived when much of the rest of the fort was sold off after the military left. Exhibits cover the regiment's campaigns from the Spanish-American War through the Second World War, with uniforms, weapons, photographs, and documents. Admission is modest and the museum is run by volunteers with deep knowledge of the post's history.
