Capricorn Sound Studio

Capricorn Sound Studio at 536 Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard is the building where Southern rock was recorded, mixed, and sent out to the world in the 1970s. The Allman Brothers Band recorded here. So did dozens of other artists who defined the genre. The studio reopened after a restoration and now operates as both a working recording space and a cultural site open to visitors.

Tours are available and take in the original recording rooms, the control booth, and the story of Capricorn Records and its impact on American music. The historical marker outside documents the studio's significance. Macon's music tourism circuit — the Big House, Rose Hill Cemetery, and Capricorn are its three main points — can be covered in a full day, and the city has made efforts to connect the sites with walking and driving routes.

A story
Phil Walden founded Capricorn Records in Macon in 1969 specifically to record Southern rock. His first signing was the Allman Brothers Band. Over the following decade the studio at 535 Cotton Avenue recorded dozens of albums that defined a genre — Wet Willie, Charlie Daniels, the Marshall Tucker Band, Widespread Panic. The label collapsed in 1979 when the Southern rock bubble burst, and the studio sat empty for years. It has since been restored and operates again as a working studio.
