When to Go

The southern Appalachians are usable year-round but each season has trade-offs.

Spring (March–May) is thru-hiker season — the trail teems with northbound hikers and the camaraderie is part of the experience, though shelters and parking lots can be crowded. Wildflowers and mountain laurel bloom from April through May.

Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, even at altitude, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine. Bring full rain gear regardless. Crowds thin after the thru-hiker wave passes.

Autumn (September–November) is the best season for most visitors. Cooler temperatures, low humidity, and the colour change in October are excellent.

Winter (December–February) is cold but rarely snowy enough to close trails. Some Forest Service roads close. The summit can be windy and exposed; bring proper layers. The mountain is quietest in this season.
