Valdosta's downtown is a compact, walkable island of antebellum and early-twentieth-century architecture surrounded by the sprawl of the I-75 corridor. The Lowndes County Courthouse anchors the central square, and the surrounding blocks have a handful of ornate brick storefronts and civic buildings that give a sense of what this tobacco-era market town once looked like. It won't hold you for more than an hour, but it's a pleasant place to stretch your legs after a long drive. The downtown is quiet — some storefronts are vacant — but there are a few cafes and restaurants within walking distance of the square.
