Eating Out

Hilo's food scene reflects the Big Island's multicultural plantation heritage: Japanese, Filipino, Portuguese, Hawaiian, and Chinese influences mix in a way you don't always find on Oahu. Loco moco — a bowl of rice topped with a hamburger patty, fried egg, and brown gravy — was reportedly invented here, and the diners that still serve it are doing exactly what they did in the 1940s. The farmers market is the best source of fresh tropical fruit and local coffee. Seafood is excellent: poke (raw fish with soy and sesame) is everywhere, and fresh ahi from the auction at the harbour is as good as it gets.
