Four Mile is a popular swimming spot east of Hilo, along Kalanianaole Avenue before Richardson's. It is not a sandy beach in the usual sense, but more like a protected saltwater pool with a sandy bottom.
The water can feel cooler than expected because ocean water mixes with freshwater springs. It is a useful stop if you want a swim without the rougher open-ocean feel of some Big Island shorelines.
