Kailua Beach on the windward side of Oahu is consistently rated one of the best beaches in America — powdery white sand, warm shallow water, the Mokulua islands sitting offshore, and the Ko'olau mountains rising dramatically behind. The drive from Honolulu through the Nu'uanu Pali tunnel takes about 30 minutes.
The trade winds that blow steadily across the bay make Kailua excellent for windsurfing and kite surfing, with several rental shops in town. Kayak rental to paddle out to the offshore islands is popular and easy for beginners. The beach itself never gets as crowded as Waikiki, and the surrounding Kailua town has excellent coffee shops. An easy day trip from Honolulu.
